If your family is anything like mine, dinner conversation turns to finances midway through the meal. After my dad asks if I need money (mind you, I’m nearly 40), he naturally asks about the grandkids — ages 6, 6, and 10.

Now, when I was a kid, my grandfather gave me and my brothers silver dollars to tuck away for college. I imagined they would amass quite the fortune, but, at best, a few hundred dollars for books.

My dad isn’t handing out silver coins, but he is asking about 529 plans. Today, I can have a good conversation with him on the topic, but that wasn’t always the case.
